Ann Miller with Leaf Madonna
1960s
Retrospective
Grampa Cleve Miller, always encouraged me by looking at my childhood projects and saying, “Ann can do anything!” I was forced to go away to Allen High School in 1961 because Cherokee County schools were segregated until 1965. It was hard not to resent the fact that one little Black child could not attend the Andrews High School; however, that choice changed my life. I later found that it was the best thing that could have happened to me. As a creative person, I was valued as an artist by my Allen High School teachers, one who even paid for initial art classes for me.
