A Simpler, Sweeter Time

A simpler, sweeter time

and I want to go back again

to feel the love

that we felt then

where Old Jake pulled the wagon we rode

We smelled the morning glories

and we listened to Grampaw’s stories

waited for the old white man with a sack

filled with chestnuts on his back

We cried to fly away with Peter Pan

to a far-off, strange, exciting land.

We played house just the three of us

without jealousy, without a fuss.

A one-room school building in our neighborhood

a roaring stove filled with Daddy’s firewood

a home to go to when evening came ‘round

as we heard Mama call us clean and sound

“Nina, Mary Alice, Ann!! Come inside.

Come in now. It’s getting dark outside!”

As we dream our little dreams,

memories flow back in a stream

and going home in our hearts begins to stir.

Oh, yes, life was simple,

and yes, so much sweeter.
